Cigarette Girl: the Movie

This post is overdue, but still on time. The hype I saw was good enough to pull your jaded Wintermute into this Cigarette Girl movie trip. Before I subject you to the seductive imagery that sucked me in, I want to slip in a couple of comments (please don't even click any of my links just yet).  Although the post-modern era of Everyman-an-artist has produced a lot of crap all over the map, it also enables talent that hasn't been squeezed through the Hollywood black hole vortex.

I'd heard a bit about Memphis independent filmmaker Mike McCarthy but had never seen his work or met him: I'm more of an R&B Wild Bill's hipster type from a previous semi-generation. But as I said, the buildup to release of Mike's latest project broke through my ennui, and I went to a meet-and-greet with him and the star of Cigarette Girl, Cori Dials.

I think Mike McCarthy at this moment is like Sam Phillips when he had just cut his first Sun record with big hit potential. Now I've talked with Sam before, and he was real, unassuming, and very cordial. Mike McCarthy is the same way: intelligent, truly interested in what you say, and respectful of what went before him. You want this man to succeed.

Cori Dials, what can I say? If I get too effusive describing her, and a woman I'm dating sees it, she might not believe my interest is purely "professional"; and BAM!, I'm in the doghouse. Yes, Cori is physically striking. As hell. On wheels, even: she was one of the most glamorous of the Memphis Roller Derby girls. But hell or high water, I am going to tell you how groovy, sparkling, and ebullient her personality is. She is not stuck up. Her smile will stick in your memory. You want this woman to succeed.

KK, here are the goods. First, the poster:

Makes you want to watch the trailer. Be sure to fullscreen it; it's widescreen if you got it:

That made you want to know more about Cori Dials, didn't it? ;-) OK, click here. Mike McCarthy? Click here.

Want a bonus poster of Cori, in even less costume?

Call your local art house and ask them to book this future cult favorite.

UPDATE: This movie is listed now on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Click here.

  1. your gushing, wintermute! What about the films theme; it's references to illicit drug culture, or its ubiquitous violence as a statement about society in general?

  2. Cigarette girl is the best movie I've watched in my life, I want to come back watching that because the woman is so hot, after I seeing it I have an excellent moment with my girlfriend so she got little bit jealousy because I only thought in that girl.
